Movies that have made me who I am:
I still remember sitting in my house with my parents watching movies on rainy days. Getting me to sit still was a big chore, but I was always quite for a good movie. Being as melodramatic as I am, I find myself using the ideals found in these movies to shape my own ideologies. Though the following list is not comprehensive, it does highlight some of the more definitive parts of my personality.
The Princess Bride
As one of my favourite movies, it is only fitting that this movie starts my list. This is my rainy day movie. My sick day movie. My anything day movie. It all started with my cousin, Samantha, making me watch it one time she babysat me. For some reason… it stuck. I think everyone hopes to find their own Princess Buttercup or Westley. Why this movie is significant is not because of its sheer awesomeness. No. This movie is significant because it first made me believe in true love. Inception style J
Star Wars Original Trilogy

Extremely nerdy, but a very necessary submission. I’m sure I’m not the only one who would say that Star Wars defined a generation. But to me, it introduced a very internal sense of morality. The Jedi Code as the series puts it. Now I know exactly what you are thinking. ”Seriously?” Yes… seriously. I have never overlooked how much this sense of Jedi Code has played in my life. It starts from as basic as if you play Fable, you feel compelled to be good. And even though it’s a game, you feel literally depressed when you do something evil. Translating to real life. I won’t say that I am the most chivalrous person in the world. I have been known to be some sort of a… d-bag? Sometimes… BUT I always have good intentions. It’s hard-wired into my system. Just another nice guy.
When Harry met Sally

This is another one of my favourite movies. I still remember being forced to watch this by my first girlfriend. I thought this movie was going to be the biggest chick flick in the world. And being the manly man that I was, I would have none of it. Little did I know that I am a sucker for chick flicks and would learn to love this movie. The best parts of this movie is not the story of Harry and Sally, it is the small stories of the old couples about how they met and got married. This movie introduced the concept of imperfect love. This love is the real love. Maybe not the first time around, but maybe the third time you see something, do something, or meet someone… your opinion will change for the better. And it will be worth it.
Ip Man 2

Although I personally think that the original Ip Man movie was better, it was in the sequel where I learned my life lesson. This movie introduced to me the martial artists’ code of ethics and how it applies to life. It may serve to understand that I am not religious, but I do believe in ethics. I think if I were to believe in any religion it would be Buddhism. Both my understanding of Buddhism and the code of ethics in this movie tend to say that if you are humble and work hard, great things will come. If I believe in anything, I believe in that.
(500) Days of Summer

This movie depicts exactly how I run through my relationships. Exactly. But the most important lesson I learned from this movie was near the very end with this quote.
